The Hercules of Fishing Line April 21, 2008 mrbigbluelight (Midwest) 3 out of 3 found this review helpful
For those of you old-timers (and I'm one of them) who think of "Braided Line" as the equivalent of "hemp rope" (like we used to use in the 60's), well, please think again.
This braided line is thin, has very little memory, comes off the spool like silk, is tough as Hades, does not absorb water and weaken, can stand up to high temps and sunlight and not lose its strength, and has NO stretch.
Need to set the hook ? If you have a tight line, and pull back on the rod, this line sets the hook as if you were using a steel cable: NO STRETCH !
It isn't as inexpensive as Stren or other "premium" monofilament lines, but it is cheaper in the long run.
I used to change my line at the start of every fishing season but now I don't need to. Sure, I usually do as part of my "ritual", but if we get a couple of warm days, and the fishing bug hits, ..... We're Fishing !
We don't need to worry about the Spiderwire being on the reels since last year .... this stuff is TOUGH !
There is one drawback: if you fish along the shoreline where there are trees, and try to send your lure/bait underneath overhanging branches, and ..... well, you aim isn't very true, and you wind up with you lure/bait in the tree, GOOD LUCK ! If you hang into smaller twigs or leaves, you'll pull it out. If you hook into a big branch, you better have a knife or nail clippers hanging to cut the line. You definitely don't want to try biting your line to cut it (unless you're Superman).
So ... get this line. We use 20 lb, moss green and catch fish ANYWHERE.
We fish out of the Current River (crystal clear) and the warning about "Don't let the fish see your line" doesn't, for some reason, apply to this line. I'm sure they must see it (I guess), but they must not care.
Again, you won't be sorry for purchasing this braided line.
Mostly USER ERROR July 15, 2010 Craig E. Dunn (joliet, IL) This line is excellent--and I have seen and heard others complain about bird nesting and losing lures--99% of those issues are user error! You have to be careful spooling your line--keep a steady amount of pressure on the line and keep the pressure point at at least the 1st eye of your rod away while spooling. As for losing lures, almost everyone I know who used braided line loses a few--because we don't tie braided line knots and this stuff will un-knot itself in 1 or 2 casts--and that again is our fault, not the line.
It may take a little more care to prep te line on your reels, but it is well worth it if you fish in and around a lot of structure. I fish for big bass with ultra-light tackle and generally the reel or the rod gives out before this line on those fish.
Read the directions carefully, spool you r line with consistency and learn some new knots and you will have no trouble with any of the issues people are listing on here.
So far, so good. March 3, 2008 D. Grooms (Tennessee, USA) 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
I've used the 15lb braid (4lb mono equivalent) three times now, and thus far, it's done well. VERY smooth (and silent) coming off the reel. No noticeable stretching in the line so far. My only concern is that, the first time I used it, I got a nick in the line when I hung up between some rocks. I'm continuing to use it with the nick in it, just to see how it holds up. I don't know if the hang-up I had was severe enough to cause a nick in braid this thick (I didn't think it was), but I'm still using it, catching mostly bluegills, and it hasn't caused me any problems yet. Thus far, I can easily recommend it.
Still Good After All These Years July 12, 2009 David McEldery (Plains, MT USA) 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
I finally chickened out and decided to re-spool some of my reels. One of my bait casting reels had 15 to 20 year-old Spiderwire on it. It was all I ever used for trolling for macs and steelhead. After one or two decades it still had no memory, always played out straight and true. I tried some highly touted lines from other companies and had lots of problems with line memory, kinks, loops, snarls, backlashes, etc., and finally ordered more Spiderwire. The "Stealth" moniker didn't sell me, though when I tried it out yesterday (on a new spin casting reel) on macs, I couldn't see that darn stuff against the water when I snagged up on a rock - needed to maneuver the boat around it, tried unsuccessfully to free it - the moss green really IS stealthy. The line seems just as good as the original, no kinks, no snarls, no backlashes, and VERY tough. I couldn't break it, finally had to cut it. Now I'll see if it'll take another 15 years of abuse! I noticed one thing that might be a small negative. I used 20 lb test, but the line diameter is still pretty small. After hauling in a few fish in the 10 lb range, the line had a tendency to bite or pinch tightly between strands on the reel, so when I opened the bail to hand play a little extra line out, it felt "sticky", wouldn't spool out without help. However, I got good, long casts, and it didn't seem to be a problem. It may be that if you caught large fish on lighter lures than I was using, it might not play out as well, due to sticking, but I'm speculating. It works well with heavy lures. The old, non-teflon coated Spiderwire didn't bite or pinch between the strands.
not so good. February 16, 2010 S. YOUNG (WI USA) it is very strong. if you like mono stick with it. no give, tangles are impossible to sort and buries on your spool.
